About six months ago, a friend bought a couple of those Penguin Classics (with the blank covers) to give to another friend of ours for her birthday. He asked me to draw on the front, so I did. And it was pretty fun!

Time has been strange for me recently, and I'm having a harder time than usual keeping my mind on track. There's so much inner noise. Five years ago I thought I was heading somewhere, professionally, but now? Where did those five years go? I honestly thought I would be better than this by now.

The recent death of my grandmother did it, bumped me off the road. After witnessing the prolonged period of unnecessary suffering she went through, and the emotional turmoil of her farewell last week, I'm finding it difficult to focus now more than ever. I'm not the most emotional person, outwardly. A friend back in high school once said that if she ever saw me crying, she'd know something catastrophic had happened. So when I cry it's generally over huge things that overwhelm me to such a point that I can't keep the cork in anymore. That, or I've bottled it up so much that a random act of, say, stubbing my toe just opens the floodgates (though this has happened only once, heh).
I guess I'm a bit reserved, I think more than I speak. There's reasons for this. One is that I sometimes have difficulty transferring thoughts from my head into verbal speech. I'll say something which sounded fine in my head, and once it's been voiced suddenly it sounds confusing or arbitrary. So I take my time answering questions and talking with people, I can't do rapid-fire response, I guess my brain just doesn't work like that.
So rather than being a talker I'm a good listener, which people sometimes take as me being aloof (I'm not), snobbish (errr), or a weirdo (are we out of high school yet?).

Where was I? Oh yeah.
So, take one not usually emotionally forthcoming person and hit her with the past month or so of watching a close relative wither away in pain where there is nothing in their power that can be done but wait, and add that to already burgeoning feelings of failure and lack of progression in life and work. It's a repeating process, always seem to end up right back where I started, where I am right now.

I don't have a terrible life. I have people who love and support me, whether I am too stupid to recognise that sometimes or not. I'm not down and out, and I know I have potential. But I'm afraid and lonely and I don't know why.

I'll end this drivel here. I'm glad my grandma finally went, she should never have had to endure what she did, a person like her. It's undignified, it's torture, it's not fair or right or any of those things. Yeah, I know the world doesn't run on the concept of fairness. But she's at peace now, and she can rest.

Uni's over, it was great to see everybody's work up at the exhibition on Friday. Some real standouts there! I guess this means I can start showing some of the work I was doing this year now for Honours year.

Hmm I guess the overarching "theme" was incursions of Order/Chaos that warped the landscape and those in it; initially my plan was to be following the travels of two people, one through a Chaos land and one through an Order land, but as usual time got away from me (or maybe I was aiming too high hahaha). However I'd done a lot of creature and environment desigs, so I will be posting them over the next few days. This is not counting the three sketchbooks and several pads worth of painting studies and practice I did, and my creature sculpture.

Scraped into the deadline for the second Battle of the Sexes Thunderdome over at ConceptArt.org Forums. You'd think by now I'd have figured out some way of starting images earlier and getting them done properly on time.

Us girls had the topic "A great day to die." I tried to steer away from easier/more obvious sort of ideas but I'm not sure if it worked. Either way, good colour practice.

Apart from the above, uni work has taken up most of my time these days. Not that I'm complaining, I love being able to go in and spend hours working on a big Wacom Cintiq. I'll post some of that work soon, just need to get more of it done first!

Oh right, I have a blog. Been heaps busy with uni work (so much painting and drawing, it's awesome), but I like to take breaks from that body of work and do other stuff. This here's the last of the "give me an idea to draw" series, where I asked people what I should do, and got some interesting results. This one was "draw a zombie moose" and well, here it is (click for full size).

I think I have a love for black and white illustration. I am working on my painting skills and want to get better at it, but there is something about solid black lineart I really like.

You know that 100 themes thing? I figured I'd go chronologically.
01 - "Introduction"

Aww, lil 'Nula (yikes). I was such a dinosaur nut as a kid. I found it funny how I changed the style as I worked on it. Probably should stop flipping through art books when I work. Anyway, "Introduction" - the book there is an old old old Jurassic Park book. I still have it. It's rather battered, but inside it is an interview with Mark "Crash" McCreery, one of the principal artists who worked on it. There are two awesome pencil drawings of his in there. It's not much, I know, but when I first saw them I knew that I wanted to be like him.
At least, get to draw stuff for a living. So. Introducing where I have started from, and on to the next theme...I'll actually use references this time, heh heh heh.

And some associated scribbles. Talk about random idea changes, eh?

I went sketching in Sydney on St Patrick's Day...Circular Quay mostly, but I also wandered off to Hyde Park for a bit. Then it started raining :

This was done for the debut of the Weekly Creature at PolykarbonBBS - the topic was 'Rock Munchers of the Himalayas'. 3 hours, PS7.

"Commonly sighted by the Tibetan monks in the area are these strange creatures. They usually live up above the snowline, but venture down to the rocky, scree-filled valleys where they have been observed crushing the abundant rocks in their powerful jaws. Some have suggested that the beasts, finding little mineral supplements in their usual territories above the snowline, come down to aid their diet in this way."

I am sick of transferring this over and seeing horrendous colours in comparison to what I see on my laptop screen. I have calibrated and recalibrated it and still it does not match. I mean geez, all the contrast and finer details just up and disappear when I stick it on the 'net-equipped computer. Eeew! Anyway.

I finally figured it out. I'm going to do a personal project, based on the trippy as hell (and sometimes quite beautiful) dreams I have been having.

I've been writing them down and I think I can get a good series of illustrations out of this, in different mediums too. I'm excited and somewhat daunted but for once I believe I can make something from a strong idea.
